Bodrum - a few useful ideas. I would not go back there.. I'm trying to write a review about Bodrum/ Gumbet in Turkey, but this site just throws up all kinds of unrelated garbage, resorts in Hawaii, Yorkshire etc. I'm just trying to warn people of a few pitfalls of the area. One thing to be aware of is that Bodrum Airport is terrible, and this is routine. I had to go through 4 sets of identical extensive security checks on the return journey, one before check in, one after check in, and 2 separate identical checks one after another in the departure gates area. And these were full security checks - everything off, public strip tease, being swabbed with chemicals on your skin, all your belongings tipped out, etc. Four identical checks, one after another. There was no reason for this, like a bomb warning or something - it seems they just do this all the time as a matter of routine. It was like being treated like a prisoner of war or something. Pretty awful. This happened to everybody - elderly people, people with very young children etc. People who have been there before say it's always like this at Bodrum - they do this all the time. It was not a one off. Why I don't know. Maybe the Turks just want to make work and create unnecessary jobs for their relatives. But I would never go back to Bodrum for this reason alone. Bodrum Castle is quite impressive, with exhibits of ancient shipwrecks and ancient burial sites in the area. Some of the stuff on display like ancient gold jewellery and cargo from shipwrecks is jaw dropping, but it is spoiled by extremely poor lighting. With a lot of it, you just can't see what it is. It costs 350 lira/ £15, and you can hire an audio guide for another 125 TL. But if you do, you have to hand over your passport as security to make sure you return it, and it's advisable never to give your passport to somebody else abroad. The restaurant there is expensive, £2 for a can of soft drink, but the toilets are free. Buses in the area are quite good, 17 seater white minibuses you hail as they go past. There aren't any bus stops, you just tell the driver when you want to get off. They cost about 15TL. Some things in the shops are quite cheap, loaves of bread 5TL and 10TL, packets of cheese and salami 10 and 17TL, can of local Efes beer 40TL. £1=22/23 TL. Beer in a bar 65-80 TL or more. But eating out is not particularly cheap. English breakfast 180TL (some places had just put it up to 250TL with the start of the main tourist season. ) That's £8/ £11 compared to £2.99 in Wetherspoon's back home. So it can get quite expensive if you eat out all the time and there are a few of you. A meal like a steak of some kind or lamb chops is £20. Even fish and chips was £20. Even things like kebabs, burgers and pizzas can be quite expensive, £7 for a burger. There are some takeaways in Bodrum centre that are cheaper. There is a KFC near Bodrum harbour that does a 2 piece chicken meal with a coke for 92TL. There are a lot of traders and hawkers for clothing, shoes, sunglasses etc. that will try it on. One offered me 2 pairs of socks for £1. I said okay, and before I knew it he was piling boxer shorts, towels etc. into a bag and asking me for £45. They will rip you off if they can. One thing to be aware of is that although it is a big tourist area, very few people there speak English. This is surprising. I learnt a few words of Turkish while I was there, and their English was about as good as my Turkish - not very. This even applies to all the small offices that offer trips and tours - they just don't speak English. They are not very good. I booked a trip to Ephesus with one and it was cancelled. They said there were no boat trips available, but I went to Bodrum harbour and there are little stands there that offer 5-6 hour boat trips for 750TL/ £32. You can have a sauna and Turkish bath for £10, and it's quite good. I hope that is some use to anyone going to Bodrum. It is quite a nice area, nice beaches etc. But as I say, I would not go back there just because of Bodrum Airport alone. . .

Dad & Son. While his mother was having a yacht vacation with her friends in the blue-green bays of Bodrum, my son and I stayed at this hotel and spent a pleasant four days. The room was clean and comfortable; the staff (including the manager) were polite and respectful. The location is convenient for the beach and night events.. .
